Youth for Green Hydrogen (Y4H2) Scholarship

The Youth for Green Hydrogen (Y4H2) scholarship programme is a key initiative under the Joint Communiqué of Intent (JCoI), aimed at building a skilled, future-ready workforce to support Namibia’s transition to a green hydrogen economy. Through academic and vocational training, the programme equips young Namibians with critical knowledge and practical skills in renewable energy and hydrogen technologies.

To date, SASSCAL has awarded scholarships to 150 young Namibians, supporting their studies in Master’s programmes and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) related to green hydrogen and sustainable energy systems.

The programme primarily targets:

  • Unemployed graduates with academic or technical qualifications

  • Employed youth with a strong case for upskilling in the hydrogen sector

To ensure inclusive impact, 85% of scholarships were awarded to unemployed youth, and 15% to employed applicants.

As part of their academic journey, students from the 1st cohort participated in a mobility programme hosted by leading German institutions. This international exposure provides scholars with hands-on learning, cross-cultural collaboration, and access to cutting-edge research in green hydrogen. Upon returning to Namibia, they are better positioned to contribute meaningfully to national efforts in building a sustainable, inclusive green economy.

The Y4H2 programme continues to serve as a model for regional capacity building and a pathway for youth empowerment in Namibia’s clean energy transition.
